Base Backpackers is situated 50 metres from the beach in Paihia, the Bay of Islands. This funky hostel offers dormitory accommodation, a swimming pool and a hot tub. Each of the dorm rooms is furnished with 8 beds and has a balcony overlooking the courtyard and pool area. All rooms are heated and bed linen is provided. There are even special female-only dorm rooms. Facilities at Base include an outdoor deck with barbeque, swimming pool and spa. The hostel’s bar is open daily and offers a nightly barbeque plus drink specials. Base Backpackers is a short walk from the beach and also close to Paihia’s shops, cafés and bars.

Paihia has stunning views over the Bay of Islands. Most of the maritime activities start at the wharf at the corner of Marsden and Williams roads. The Maritime Building next to the wharf houses Fullers/Great Sights/AwesomeNZ and a few other operators, offering a number of excursions, and across the road there is Explore NZ and some more operators, also offering a number of excursions from dolphin adventures to Cape Reinga. Things to do include bush walks, swimming, dive the Rainbow Warrior wreck and swimming with wild dolphins. Any of the activities can be booked from Base Pipi Patch, by staff that have experienced much of what Paihia has to offer.
